The 25-year-old NHL star has invested \\$7.5 million of his personal funds to convert a large heritage home in downtown Vancouver into a shelter for homeless youth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hughes, known for his leadership and heart both on and off the ice, says the initiative stems from a deep desire to give back to the city that has embraced him since he joined the Canucks in 2019. The shelter, set to open in early 2026, will provide housing, counseling, education support, and job training for at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 24.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVancouver has given me so much. I wanted to do something that could truly change lives,\u201d Hughes said in a press statement. \u201cThese kids deserve a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The shelter will be operated in partnership with local non-profit organizations and will accommodate up to 50 residents at a time.
