Proposed Jared McCann Trade: Is History Repeating Itself for the Maple Leafs?

A recent trade proposal involving the Toronto Maple Leafs and Seattle Kraken for forward Jared McCann has sparked debate, with many calling it both costly and questionable. The proposed deal, which surfaced through PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, suggests Toronto reacquiring McCann in exchange for young prospect Easton Cowan, forward Nick Robertson, and a 2026 first-round pick.

While McCann has become a reliable scorer for the Kraken, tallying 27, 40, and 29 goals over the past three seasons, the Leafs’ history with him raises concerns. Toronto initially acquired McCann from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2021, only to lose him to Seattle in the expansion draft just days later—a move that still haunts fans. At the time, McCann had shown promise but wasn’t yet the goal-scoring threat he later became.

Supporters of the trade argue that McCann could provide much-needed secondary scoring and fit well as Toronto’s third-line center. However, critics highlight the steep cost, questioning whether giving up three potential assets—Cowan, Robertson, and a future first-round pick—is worth it. Both Cowan and Robertson have yet to reach their full potential, with Robertson already matching McCann’s pre-Seattle career-high in goals.

The deal raises concerns that Toronto could be making the same mistake twice—giving up young

talent
