Penn State Olympic Champ David Taylor Retires After Missing 2024 Games

David Taylor, Penn State wrestling legend and Olympic gold medalist, has officially retired from all competitive wrestling after failing to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Taylor, a two-time NCAA champion and 2020 Olympic gold medalist at 86kg, made the announcement in August 2024, citing personal reflection and a desire to focus on coaching.

Taylor fell short in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, where he was upset by younger rival Aaron Brooks. The loss ended his hopes of defending his Olympic title. In a statement, Taylor admitted that while he still loved competing, he felt it was time to transition into a new role.

Shortly after announcing his retirement, Taylor accepted the head coaching position at Oklahoma State University. He plans to mentor the next generation of wrestlers, bringing his vast experience to one of the sport’s most historic programs.

“I’ve given everything to wrestling, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. Now, it’s time to give back,” Taylor said.

His decision marks the end of an era for Penn State wrestling, where he played a crucial role in the program’s dominance. Fans will now watch him build his legacy in

coaching.
