In a groundbreaking move, the Toronto Maple Leafs have named Auston Matthews as the 26th captain in franchise history, creating buzz across the hockey world. Matthews becomes the first American-born player to wear the “C” for the storied team and only the second non-Canadian to hold the honor, following in the footsteps of Swedish legend Mats Sundin.

Drafted first overall by Toronto in 2016, Matthews has emerged as one of the NHL’s premier talents. By the time of the announcement, he had already racked up 368 goals in just 562 games, collecting three Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies and a Hart Memorial Trophy along the way. His leadership and work ethic have made him a natural choice to succeed John Tavares, who served as captain since 2019.

General Manager Brad Treliving praised Matthews for his influence both on and off the ice, calling him a “generational player” and an inspiring presence in the locker room. Tavares also gave his full endorsement, noting Matthews’ readiness to take on the responsibility.

The move symbolizes a new era for the Maple Leafs, as the team continues its quest for its first Stanley Cup championship since 1967.
