Seimone Augustus, a legendary figure in women’s basketball, has returned to her alma mater, Louisiana State University (LSU), as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team. The announcement was made by LSU head coach Kim Mulkey on May 20, 2024.

Augustus is one of the most decorated athletes in LSU history. During her collegiate career from 2002 to 2006, she led the Tigers to their first three Final Four appearances and was a two-time Naismith College Player of the Year. Her professional accolades include being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft, winning four WNBA championships with the Minnesota Lynx, earning eight All-Star selections, and securing three Olympic gold medals.

In 2023, Augustus became the first female athlete at LSU to have a statue erected in her honor. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in April 2024 and is set to be inducted into both the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame later this year.

Augustus fills the coaching vacancy left by Johnny Derrick’s retirement. Her return to LSU is seen as a full-circle moment, bringing her wealth of experience and leadership back to the program she helped elevate.
