LSU football icon Tommy Casanova has returned to Baton Rouge, joining the university as a special assistant to the athletic director. This marks a homecoming for one of the most versatile and celebrated athletes in LSU history.
Casanova’s legacy at LSU is legendary. From 1969 to 1971, he earned three All-America honors, excelling as a cornerback, punt returner, and occasional offensive contributor. His dynamic play earned him a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 1971 college football preview, where he was hailed as the nation’s most complete player. Casanova is one of only six players in LSU history to be named First-Team All-SEC three times .
Following his collegiate career, Casanova played six seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, earning three Pro Bowl selections. He retired at age 27 to pursue a career in medicine, becoming an ophthalmologist in his hometown of Crowley, Louisiana .
In his new role at LSU, Casanova is expected to leverage his extensive experience to support the athletic department’s initiatives, mentor student-athletes, and strengthen alumni relations. His return underscores LSU’s commitment to honoring its storied past while building a robust future.
