Contrary to circulating rumors, Ilkay Gündoğan has not joined Wrexham AFC. Instead, the German midfielder re-signed with Manchester City on a free transfer in August 2024, following a one-year stint at FC Barcelona .
Gündoğan, who captained City to a historic treble in the 2022–23 season, initially departed for Barcelona in June 2023 . During his time in La Liga, he contributed five goals and 14 assists across all competitions . However, with Barcelona’s acquisition of Dani Olmo and ongoing financial constraints, the club permitted Gündoğan’s departure, facilitating his return to Manchester City .
Upon his return, Gündoğan signed a one-year contract with an option for an additional year, contingent on appearances . He expressed enthusiasm about rejoining City, stating, “To have the opportunity to return here means so much” .
As of May 2025, Gündoğan remains a Manchester City player, with no official reports linking him to Wrexham AFC.
