Marc Lasry, the former owner of the Bucks, still want a NWSL team….

Former Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry remains committed to acquiring a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team, despite previous unsuccessful attempts. In 2024, Lasry and his firm, Avenue Capital Group, made bids for Angel City FC and the North Carolina Courage but were unsuccessful. Angel City was ultimately acquired by Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife, Willow Bay .

Lasry’s attempt to purchase a majority stake in the Courage failed due to NWSL’s restrictions against private-equity ownership, as the league prefers individual owners. He acknowledged these rules and continues to explore viable pathways to obtain a team .

Lasry’s interest in women’s sports is part of a broader investment strategy. In 2023, he launched the Avenue Sports Fund, focusing on women’s sports teams in the U.S., basketball teams in Africa, and other sports teams in Asia . He believes that women’s sports are a significant growth opportunity, citing increasing fan engagement and media rights valuations .

Despite setbacks, Lasry remains optimistic about investing in the NWSL and continues to seek opportunities that align with league regulations and his investment goals.
