‘I’ve been waking up at 3am with some real bad thoughts’: Jed puts Ricky’s mind at ease in fairytale Raiders win
Jed Stuart’s dream NRL debut couldn’t have come at a better time—for both himself and his coach. After weeks of mental battles and sleepless nights, Stuart turned his emotional turmoil into triumph, starring in the Canberra Raiders’ gritty win over the Wests Tigers. “I’ve been waking up at 3am with some real bad thoughts,” Jed admitted post-match. “But tonight made it all worth it.”

The 19-year-old forward was immense in his first outing, showing maturity beyond his years with strong carries, fearless defence, and a try-saving tackle late in the game. Coach Ricky Stuart, who had been under pressure after a string of close losses, was visibly emotional after the win. “I’ve watched this kid work harder than anyone,” Ricky said. “To see him come out and deliver like that—it’s everything this club stands for.”
The fairytale debut was made even more special with Jed’s family in the stands, including his mother, who’s been a pillar of support through his mental health battles. As Jed embraced his teammates at full-time, there was a sense that this was more than just a debut—it was the start of something truly special.
