CHICAGO — A 33-year-old man has been charged with the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl aboard a CTA Purple Line train on Saturday evening, authorities announced.

According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, the assault occurred around 7 p.m. as the northbound train approached the Howard station. Witnesses told police they saw the man engage the girl in conversation before the attack took place in a relatively empty train car.
Transit police were alerted by a passenger who called 911. The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed pending court proceedings, was arrested at the Howard station shortly after the train arrived. Officers said the teen was found in distress and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“This was a deeply disturbing incident, and we are committed to ensuring justice for the victim,” a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department said.
The suspect is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. The CTA has since increased patrols and is reviewing surveillance footage to aid the investigation.
