Celtic could face star they’ve not replaced during pre-season…
Celtic could come face-to-face with a familiar figure they’ve yet to truly replace during their upcoming pre-season schedule — Giorgos Giakoumakis. The Greek striker, now playing for Atlanta United in MLS, is reportedly set to feature in the Hoops’ stateside tour, which includes a clash against the American side.
Giakoumakis left Celtic in early 2023 after an impressive spell that saw him net 26 goals in just 57 appearances. Despite not always being first choice under Ange Postecoglou, his physical presence, clinical finishing, and work rate made him a fan favourite. Since his departure, Celtic have yet to find a like-for-like replacement who offers the same goal threat and battling style up front.
While Kyogo Furuhashi remains the club’s talisman, his game differs greatly from Giakoumakis’ more traditional number nine role. The contrast has left many fans wondering if Celtic’s attacking options are truly complete.
Facing Giakoumakis in pre-season could serve as a sharp reminder of what the club lost — and possibly reignite calls for a new striker with similar attributes. For Brendan Rodgers, it will be a valuable opportunity to assess his current squad against a known former threat.
