Billy Slater Reveals Why Josh Papali’i Was Handed Origin Swansong

Queensland Maroons coach Billy Slater has recalled veteran prop Josh Papali’i for the State of Origin decider, giving him a surprise swansong appearance in Game III. Papali’i, who retired from representative duties in 2023 after 23 Origin games, was persuaded to return following a strong season with the Canberra Raiders. Slater said the idea had “been in the back of my mind for a couple of years,” and praised Papali’i as a “warrior” whose leadership and experience could prove crucial.

The 33-year-old replaces Moeaki Fotuaika in the squad and is expected to bring added impact and composure to the Maroons’ forward pack. Slater reached out to Papali’i earlier this week and was pleased to learn the prop still had “that fire” to represent Queensland.

Papali’i recently became the Raiders’ most-capped player and welcomed his fourth child. Slater acknowledged the importance of family time and confirmed Papali’i will join the team camp later this week.

The move evokes memories of Allan Langer’s iconic 2001 recall and adds a powerful emotional element to Queensland’s push for the Origin title in Sydney. Slater said the team will benefit from Papali’i’s calm presence and deep pride in the Maroons jersey.
