Simon Donnelly, affectionately known as “Sid,” remains an unsung hero in Celtic’s history. A product of the club’s youth system, Donnelly broke into the first team in the early 1990s, a turbulent period for the Hoops as Rangers dominated Scottish football. Despite the pressure, the skilful forward made a name for himself with intelligent movement, technical finesse, and an eye for goal.
Donnelly’s most memorable contributions came during the 1997–98 season under Wim Jansen, when Celtic stopped Rangers from winning ten league titles in a row. He played a pivotal role in that historic title-winning campaign, linking up effectively with Henrik Larsson and contributing vital goals and assists throughout the season.
Though not as celebrated as some of his teammates, Donnelly’s consistency, loyalty, and flair earned him admiration among fans and respect in the dressing room. He made over 180 appearances for the club and scored 42 goals, proving his worth over seven seasons.
After leaving Celtic, Donnelly had spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Partick Thistle, and others, but his heart always remained at Parkhead. In coaching and punditry today, his love for Celtic shines through — a true Bhoy at heart and a key figure in one of the club’s most important eras.
