Padres Release Elite Defender Martín Maldonado, Outright Tyler Wade to Triple-A**

In a surprising roster move, the San Diego Padres have released veteran catcher Martín Maldonado, widely regarded as one of the elite defensive backstops in Major League Baseball. The team also outrighted infielder Tyler Wade to Triple-A, signaling a shift in depth strategy as the season progresses.

Maldonado, 38, brought 15 years of experience to San Diego, known more for his defensive prowess than offensive production. A 2017 Gold Glove winner, Maldonado has long been respected for his game-calling, leadership, and ability to manage elite pitching staffs. Over his career, he has caught multiple no-hitters and was a crucial part of the Houston Astros’ 2022 World Series championship team.

Despite his defensive value, Maldonado struggled at the plate once again in 2025, batting just .204 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 64 games for the Padres. His release likely stems from San Diego’s need to inject more offensive consistency behind the plate and open opportunities for younger talent.

Meanwhile, utilityman Tyler Wade, who offered speed and defensive versatility, will report to Triple-A after clearing waivers. The Padres appear to be recalibrating as they aim to remain competitive in a tight National League race.
