News Now : Super League Clubs Weigh Up PNG star Forward Signing as Deal for Ex-Manly as Prop Falls Through…..
Super League clubs are circling Papua New Guinea international Dan Russell amid growing speculation that the back-rower is set to make the switch from the NRL to the UK competition. Russell, who most recently played for St George Illawarra Dragons and starred for the PNG Kumuls, has reportedly been offered to Warrington Wolves as a possible injury replacement for Matty Nicholson.
While reports suggest the deal is close, no official confirmation has been made, and Super League bosses have urged caution, reminding clubs of the importance of adhering to overseas player quota regulations. Russell remains unsigned but is known to be on the radar of multiple English clubs, with his versatility and international pedigree making him an attractive option.
In contrast, a proposed move for former Manly Sea Eagles prop Matthew Lodge has collapsed. Lodge was expected to join the Dragons on a train-and-trial deal, but head coach Shane Flanagan confirmed the club had not signed the 28-year-old, and the arrangement fell through after Lodge reportedly rejected the terms. He had asked for a full-time top 30 contract rather than the $1,200-per-week trial on offer.
With the NRL door now closing, Lodge may look to revive his career in Super Leagueif a club is willing to take the game.
