In a shock development, Canberra Raiders head coach Ricky John “Sticky” Stuart AM has confirmed that the club will part ways with star forward Joseph Tapine and utility back Kaeo Weekes at the end of the 2025 NRL season.
The announcement has sent ripples through the NRL community, especially given Tapine’s role as club captain and one of the league’s premier middle forwards. Stuart praised Tapine’s contributions over the years, saying, “Joe has been an incredible leader and competitor. This was not an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made with the club’s long-term future in mind.”
Kaeo Weekes, who recently re-signed with the club until 2029, is also set to move on. Stuart explained the shift was due to evolving roster needs and Weekes’ own desire for a fresh opportunity. “Kaeo is a talented young player. He’ll go on to do great things, and we wish him nothing but the best.”
The Raiders are reportedly eyeing major roster changes for 2026 as they look to rebuild and chase premiership success. More details about the players’ destinations are expected in the coming weeks.
