In a dramatic ruling that has rocked the rugby league world, Canberra Raiders head coach Ricky Stuart has reportedly been fined $100,000 for “unprofessional conduct” following a post‑match media outburst. The penalty, if confirmed by the NRL, would stand as one of the largest fines ever imposed on a coach for behaviour off the field.
According to initial reports, the sanction stems from comments Stuart made in a press conference that were deemed to cross the line—criticising officiating, questioning referee competence, and using language considered damaging to the integrity of the game. The NRL Integrity Unit is believed to be investigating whether additional measures, such as a suspension, will be applied.
The timing of the decision raises the stakes for the Raiders, who are battling for positioning in a tight competition. Sources say that while the club has been informed, Stuart has not yet publicly responded. Inside the club, there is speculation he could face further internal disciplinary action or restrictions on media duties.
The NRL has long maintained strict rules around public commentary by coaches, warning that “any public comments … which cross the line into questioning the competence, professionalism or integrity of match officials are taken very seriously.” (See earlier fines in 2020 for a bottle‑throwing incident, and in 2022 for inappropriate comments about a player.)
As of now, the league has not confirmed the $100,000 figure. A statement is expected i
mminently.
