Home Sweet Home: LSU Legend Tommy Casanova Returns to Baton Rouge as Special Assistant to the Athletic Director…
LSU football legend Tommy Casanova is returning to Baton Rouge as a special assistant to the athletic director, marking a homecoming for one of the university’s most iconic athletes.

Casanova’s legacy at LSU is storied. From 1969 to 1971, he was a three-time All-American and one of only six players in LSU history to earn All-SEC honors three times. Known for his versatility, he played offense, defense, and special teams, famously returning two punts for touchdowns in a single game against Ole Miss in 1970.
After college, Casanova was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals, where he played six seasons and was selected to three Pro Bowls before retiring at age 27 to pursue a career in medicine. He became an ophthalmologist in his hometown of Crowley, Louisiana, and also served in the Louisiana State Senate.
In his new role at LSU, Casanova is expected to provide strategic support and mentorship within the athletic department, offering insights drawn from his diverse experiences as an athlete, physician, and public servant. His return symbolizes a full-circle moment, reinforcing LSU’s commitment to honoring its storied past while building a strong future.
