Canberra Raiders Star Jamal Fogarty Invests $1 Million to Transform House into Shelter for Homeless Youth
Canberra, ACT — Canberra Raiders playmaker Jamal Fogarty has made a significant personal contribution to support vulnerable young people, announcing a $1 million investment to convert a residential property into a dedicated shelter for homeless youths.
The project, unveiled at a community event in Canberra on Monday, will see an existing house in the inner north transformed into a safe and supportive space for young people aged 16–25 who are experiencing homelessness or unstable housing. The shelter will provide not only beds but also access to counselling, education support, job resources and mentoring programs aimed at helping residents transition to independent living.
Fogarty, a fan‑favourite halfback with deep ties to the Canberra community, said he hopes the initiative will address the growing issue of youth homelessness in the region. “I’ve been fortunate to be supported by this city throughout my career,” Fogarty said. “This is my way of giving back and helping young people have a chance at stability, dignity and a brighter future.”
Local service organisations will partner with Fogarty on the project’s operations, with the first residents expected to move in later this year. Community leaders praised the initiative as a bold example of private support enhancing social services for at‑risk youth.
